A few Words…
There has been a great deal going on over the last few weeks within the Programme and in this newsletter we feature several projects that have taken part in Assemblies, issued toolkits, opened Twitter accounts and put themselves up on YouTube. The online conference took place (more in the next issue) and it was wonderful to see so many projects networking during the day with plenty of new links being forged as a consequence

The Institutional Innovation Programme is beginning to develop a coherent identity across the projects and the phases of activity. This started to become apparent throughout the course of the Institutional Impact event [link] on 9 July. Most of the presentations and podcasts are available in the event site now [Link to Elluminate recording... password: 'ssbr0709'], even if they are not yet in their final form. We will be firming this up as material comes in from the breakout groups. Our next Newsletter will be a special issue devoted to the outcomes of this conference. Here I just want to give a big thank you to all the participants and to the support team. It was a long and very busy day in our most ambitious Elluminate event to date. Below, you will find a link to an event evaluation form. We intentionally did not collect formal evaluation on the day. We wanted to give you time to reflect on the conference, to think about new connections that you have made and to think how you might be taking these connections forward to Assemblies and eventually beyond into Benefits Realisation activities.

Conference feedback form
The online event in Elluminate on 9 July was very well attended with plenty of activity during the day. To help the support team plan future events there is a feedback form for you to fill in at http://ssbr0709.inin.jisc-ssbr.net/feedback-form/. The form has 15 items and your responses remain anonymous. Thank You.

weCAMP and i-Borrow Assembly 29 May 2009
weCAMP and i-Borrow had already discussed the possibility of working together after their initial meeting at the JISC Institutional Innovation programme meeting in London in October. Below is an account of their assembly which took place in Sheffield in May.

Elluminate and your assembly
It may not always be easy for your projects to meet face to face and if this is the case, you can hold an online assembly using Elluminate. For more details, contact Joe Rosa at joe@jisc-ssbr.net and he can provide support for the meeting setup and during the online session.

Rethinking Dissemination in Educational Technology Projects by Lawrie Phipps
What is the purpose of dissemination? For most of the projects that I have been involved with dissemination is about telling people about the project. But this idea of dissemination can be traced back to when the web was a unidirectional medium; most conferences in this field have been around, at least, since the birth of the internet. For most of the 90’s and the early part of this century to disseminate a project the most effective way was to go to a conference and hope that more than 4 people turned up to your presentation or workshop (I have been to several where that was the case, and in one particular case there were only the 5 presenters giving 3 papers in total and myself as the session chair). For more of Lawrie Phipp’s blog on dissemination, see it (here)

TELSTAR News
TELSTAR’s new Project Manager Owen Stephens talks here about the project and how it is looking at the use of references in the learning and teaching materials and environments at the Open University. The project is a collaboration between the Library and the Learning and Teaching Solutions Unit at the OU, and RefWorks-COS – the provider of the popular bibliographic management software, RefWorks. Owen also talks about what it is like to join a project midway and how with the help of a supportive team, anything is possible. Read more…
Sustainable strategies for digital resources
Tens of millions of dollars, pounds and euros are invested each year by government agencies and private foundations to develop and support digital resources in the not-for–profit sector. As institutional budgets tighten, will these digital resources be able to survive and thrive? A new study, released today by Ithaka S+R and the JISC-led Strategic Content Alliance, illustrates the varied and creative ways in which leaders of digital initiatives, particularly those developed in the higher education and cultural heritage sectors, are managing to identify sources of support and generate revenue. For more information, please see the press release (here…)
